The municipal council is increasing financial aid for local students by 25% for the 2026/2027 academic year.
The budget allocation has risen from €145,000 in the previous academic year to €180,000 for the 2026/2027 academic year. The Santiago del Teide Municipal Council has allocated a total of €180,000 in financial aid for students in the municipality for the 2026/2027 academic year—an increase of €35,000 compared to the 2025/2026 academic year. This aid is broken down as follows:
- Rental assistance for local students pursuing university degrees or vocational training programs: the council has allocated €60,000 for this purpose, an increase of €20,000 over the previous academic year.
- * Study grants for students in post-compulsory education: the council has allocated €95,000, an increase of €15,000 compared to the 2025/2026 academic year. * Funding for the purchase of textbooks and/or school supplies, as well as assistance for families with children enrolled in early childhood education (ages 0–3), remains unchanged from the previous academic year, with investments of €15,000 and €10,000, respectively. A practical example of this financial aid during the previous 2025/2026 academic year was as follows: a student from the municipality who lived in a rented apartment in La Laguna—or its vicinity—while pursuing university studies or vocational training received an individual grant of €860. For the current 2026/2027 academic year, this amount could be even higher, given the approved increase in the budget allocation.
- Consequently, this represents a form of educational support for local students—a type of assistance that very few municipalities on the island of Tenerife, or indeed across the entire Canary Islands with a population of under 20,000, are in a position to offer. The ultimate goal behind these grants—which represent a significant financial investment—is to facilitate access to education and help cover the associated costs for the students themselves and, above all, for their families.
