The City Council presented the 6th “Doña Concepción García Suárez” awards on International Women's Day.

These awards recognize individuals and organizations that promote true equality between men and women and their contributions to the social life of the municipality. Last Sunday, March 8th, coinciding with International Women's Day, the awards for the 6th edition of the “Doña Concepción García Suárez” Awards were presented at the Landmar Playa de La Arena Hotel.

During the ceremony, the following recipients received their awards:

Award in the “Women in Research” category to Adriana de Lorenzo-Cáceres Rodríguez.

Her career is characterized by solid academic and scientific excellence, positioning her as a leading figure in her field. Her commitment to gender equality in science is a fundamental aspect of her career and decisively strengthens her candidacy as a prominent woman in the scientific community.

Award in the “Women and Social Initiative” category for Olivia Vanessa Luis Alonso and Sonia Martín Ravelo.

They embody three key elements: female leadership in a male-dominated field, direct impact on the community, and commitment to equality and respectful treatment of citizens. These are women who have grown up connected to the police service, who have consciously chosen to join a historically male-dominated force, and who serve as role models for other women who wish to join the security forces.

Award in the “Women and Art” category for the Brotherhood of the Holy Sepulchre of Arguayo.

The Brotherhood of the Lord of the Holy Sepulchre of Arguayo, composed exclusively of women, is a benchmark of commitment, devotion, and community participation in the municipality of Santiago del Teide. Its history of more than two decades represents a living manifestation of the active role of women in maintaining the religious and cultural traditions of the town.

- Honorary Award for María del Carmen Alegría Rodríguez.

A woman who is both a fighter and full of creativity. This creativity manifested itself, as we have noted, in her original "verses," poems of varied content, and theatrical texts. In this way, she contributed to the social and cultural life of her town and her municipality of Santiago del Teide. All of this during very difficult decades on an economic, social, and cultural level. In times when the role and work of women were not adequately recognized. Doña Carmen Alegría Rodríguez was a great example of tenacity, creativity, and resilience.

The event featured a musical performance by the singer Tamara, and as in previous years, the award consisted of a unique handcrafted piece made by the members of the San Juan Association. It is worth noting that the piece included a mulberry wood base and was decorated with wool from sheep raised on their own farm. The painting depicts the "Tara," a symbol of Canarian women.
