The Santiago del Teide City Council rejects the implementation of the government's garbage “tax”

The plenary session of the Santiago del Teide City Council recently approved a motion presented by the popular group in which the Government of Spain is urged to repeal the new garbage collection rate for local entities that the government will impose starting next 10 April 2025.

In this context, the municipal government group expresses its deep rejection of the obligation to establish a waste rate by local entities, having to pass on the full cost of waste collection, management and treatment to citizens.

This situation represents a new attack on the pockets of citizens, who will have to pay the full costs of waste management, when in many cases the municipalities have been alleviating this burden.

In this sense, with this new tax the city council must fully pass on to the citizen the total cost of waste collection, transportation and treatment operations, without even allowing the municipality to support its taxpayers by assuming part of it. The forced implementation of this rate represents an attack on municipal autonomy by preventing City Councils and Local Entities from using their freedom when choosing their financing model for the waste collection, transportation and treatment service, without considering the size. , population, economic resources or financial situation of each municipality.

For all the above, the municipal government group urges the Government of Spain to:

1- Respect municipal autonomy and recognize the freedom of city councils to establish their own taxes, allowing local entities to alleviate the tax burden of their citizens.

2- Repeal the mandatory implementation and application of the waste tax in all municipalities and for 100% of the cost.

3- Help implement waste management systems.
