The City Council approves a motion presented by the mayor for humanitarian aid to the Venezuelan Canarian Home following the Venezuelan earthquake

The City Council recently approved a motion presented by Mayor Emilio Navarro for extraordinary humanitarian aid to the Venezuelan Canarian Home, intended to assist those affected by the earthquake that occurred on June 24, 2026, in Venezuela.

As everyone knows, on June 24, 2026, various areas of Venezuela were severely affected by an earthquake that caused significant material damage and, above all, loss of life, creating a humanitarian emergency.

Given the close historical, cultural, and human ties between the Canary Islands and Venezuela, the result of decades of emigration and the deep bonds between both peoples, it is especially important that Canarian institutions show their support for those experiencing this difficult situation. In this regard, the Venezuelan Canarian Center, a highly respected organization with a long history of supporting the Canarian community and their descendants in Venezuela, plays a vital role in channeling aid and assistance to those affected by this catastrophe.

Therefore, given this context, and in accordance with the principles of solidarity, cooperation, and social commitment that guide the actions of public administrations, it is deemed appropriate to allocate extraordinary humanitarian aid, prioritizing financial contributions as the most effective and suitable mechanism for addressing needs compared to in-kind donations, to help alleviate the most urgent needs arising from this emergency.

The Santiago del Teide City Council is already working to process, as quickly as possible and in accordance with current regulations, the necessary administrative file to make this financial aid effective, determining the amount and the legally applicable procedure with the intention of channeling these contributions through the specialized humanitarian organizations with which the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) maintains agreements for action in the field of humanitarian action.
