The Association of Tourist Municipalities of the Canary Islands (AMTC) begins the administrative processing of the Decarbonization of the destination project. Canary Green, endowed with eight million euros from the Next Generation Funds of the European Union. This was one of the main agreements of the assembly held by the association this Friday at the Royal Sun Hotel in Los Gigantes, in Santiago del Teide.

"This project is aligned with the objectives of sustainability and the promotion of smart destinations," said the president of the AMTC, José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga.

“The investment will make our destinations more competitive, moving towards a model that is more respectful of the environment, digital, accessible to all and whose benefits will reverberate both in the sector and among the resident population. Today we take one more step in those objectives with the administrative procedure agreed by the Assembly”, he added.

Another of the agreements was to submit to the Ministry of Tourism of the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism of the Government of Spain the request for the next national tourism plan, corresponding to the year 2023, to declare sun and beach destinations .

“Because of our past and because of the weight we have in the economy of this country, I think we deserve this statement. It would be a way of recognizing the effort carried out by the municipalities in recent years, with zero tourism and the pandemic. Something that in the Canary Islands, as we know, has been even more important”, said Rodríguez Fraga in this regard. “The coastal destinations have been pioneers in the creation of a model and a message”, he added.“We are also concerned about achieving the definition of a tourist municipality. This is a pending issue: to have financing to be able to assist the visitors we have and that are not included in the registers, which also demands qualified services”, said José Miguel Rodríguez on another of the topics discussed at the meeting of this Friday.

Emilio Navarro, mayor of Santiago del Teide, host municipality of the assembly, pointed out that “the association has been demonstrating its ability to join efforts and fight for common goals for some time. This is important for us to continue being competitive destinations, adapting to the times. Technology is increasingly important in the world of tourism, as we increasingly use it to plan our vacations,” he said.

“The municipalities are working hard on decarbonization, a leap in everything that has to do with the environment. The administration must adapt to all these demands”, the councilor specified.

For her part, Onalia Bueno, vice president of the AMTC, spoke about another of the current issues on the islands and that has to do with the good times that tourism is experiencing on the islands and the prospects for the immediate future. “The forecasts for the winter season are good. We have no competition in Europe at this time of year for our climate and landscape. I think this is good news for the Canary Islands”, commented the mayor of Mogán.

In this sense, José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga indicated that “we come from a summer that has been better than that of 2019 and now we expect a good winter. The arrival of energy nomads can be a great advantage for us and for the economy of the Canary Islands”
