— The member municipalities of the AMTC confirm that the second country that brings the most tourists to the Canary Islands maintains interest in traveling, despite the energy crisis and the war in Ukraine
— The German client values the good climate of the Islands and the commitment that is being made to sustainability
Canarian destinations detect signs of optimism in the German market, despite the uncertainty in the country, the second most tourists in the Canary Islands, due to the energy crisis and the war in Ukraine. This is the main conclusion drawn by the members of the Association of Tourist Municipalities of the Canary Islands (AMTC) who have had the opportunity to attend the ITB, the tourism fair that is held this week in Berlin, one of the most important in the world. together with the Spanish Fitur and the British WTM.
An issuing market that has grown 12% this winter and that this summer expects to do so by 20%, which means for the Canary Islands to be very close to the figures for 2019, the year before the pandemic and which has been taking until now as a reference to measure recovery.
In the various work meetings held at the ITB, the tour operators have conveyed to the Canary Islands municipalities that the German market is looking for destinations with a stable climate such as the Canary Islands, with mild winters and summers.
Another of the messages collected in Berlin is that the Archipelago presents an offer where nature and sustainability play a fundamental role, which is highly valued by Germans when looking for a holiday destination.
It is estimated that 69% of Germans who will take vacations in 2023 are already planning them. A high percentage, but still far from the usual behavior in this market, traditionally very farsighted. And it is that after the pandemic, another buyer profile has been making its way, who decides his trip in a time frame that ranges from fifteen days to a month.
In this ITB 2023 it has also become clear that the visitor wants something more than sun and sand. Offering an experience is highly valued and that is where the member municipalities of the AMTC are sought after as ideal interlocutors to respond to this demand for personalized treatment: diving, hiking, gastronomy... Canary destinations are powerful in offering specific products, which makes them stronger in a market as demanding as the German one.
The Canary Islands retain a very important advantage when it comes to maintaining a significant presence in the German market and that is the high degree of repeat tourists. This fidelity is seen by tour operators as another strength of the Islands.
Likewise, the municipalities of the AMTC have had meetings with the airlines, which state that they do not foresee a significant increase in seats in the future, their goal from now on being to consolidate what they have gained in recent years. Some companies immersed in renewing their fleets, to make them more sustainable.
