In previous years, this figure was close to 50 rescues, so the prevention work carried out is paying off.
The municipality of Santiago del Teide has managed to drop from about 50 rescues in previous years on municipal beaches to 37 in the past year 2022, according to the report published by the company responsible for security and maintenance of municipal beaches, West Coast Rescue S.L.
These data show that the prevention work on billboards, public address systems, flags, preventive campaigns for coastal risks in schools carried out by the Santiago del Teide City Council and the company, as well as the effectiveness of the municipal ordinance in relation to sanctions for not respecting the red flags are paying off.
The main cause of these rescues is fatigue (53%) when being dragged by the current, with 67% being men who are more rescued compared to 33% of women and being the age range of 50 to 60 years with a 32% those who need help the most due to the perception of believing that there are physical conditions that deteriorate due to age without the individual having it in mind.
Most of the causes for requests for help are due to strong waves and currents, with the rescue materials used in the same rescue tube/torpedo buoy (97%) and boats (motorbikes and zodiacs) in 3%.
